Toyota has increased its range of SUVs with the introduction of the Toyota Fortuner 2016, giving its customers an affordable diesel option to hit the roads with. The seven seater is placed between the Kluger and Prado, and will be the vehicle to beat in the coming days.
It has may off-road credentials and has gone through thousands of kilometers of testing before being officially launched in the market. It might be the SUV we have been waiting for.
“It’s a great choice for people who aspire to a luxury SUV. They want a stylish vehicle, they want seven seats and the safety of a high-seating position and great visibility; they also want genuine 4X4 ability. Fortuner definitely lives up to the promise of its road-less-travelled 4WD heritage,” said Tony Cramb, Toyota's Executive Director, Sales and Marketing.
Let's see if the vehicle lives up to those words.
StylingThe manufacturer has definitely done some good work on the appearance of this vehicle and it can be put right there in the top bracket with the latest designs. A dominant grille is used to wrap the projector lamps and the front bumper with recessed fog lamps, emphasizing the width of the vehicle.
Accessories like airbag compatible bull bars and a new tow bar with load distribution hitch puts it in a different class altogether. The back is given a sleek look too. Overall, it is a treat for the eyes and a beast on the road.
Engine and DrivingIt comes with a 2.8-litre turbodiesel engine, which can produce maximum power of 130kW and can hit peak torque of 450Nm. The braked towing capacity is about 2,800 kg and the seven seats are fitted in a configuration of 2-3-2. The seats can be adjusted to make more leg space or luggage room.
The vehicle features the Sequential mode, Eco mode and Power drive modes, which can be adjusted as per your driving style. The biggest surprise, and a pleasant one at that, comes in the form of maneuverability. Given that it is a heavy vehicle, the Fortuner 2016 offers amazing control, making it easy to drive and park in street traffic. As far as fuel consumption goes, it is likely to run 110 kms for 6-8L, depending upon how you maintain it.
SafetySince SUVs are usually bought keeping in mind a big family, safety automatically becomes important. The Fortuner 2016 has a five-star safety rating and is equipped with stability and active traction control, reversing cameras and seven airbags etc.
The price of this vehicle makes it a smart buy. It definitely has the potential to match the experience offered by some of the higher priced vehicles.
