Employment Opportunities in Bahrain
- Bahrain’s government embarked on a diversification program for the economy as early as 1960, the first nation in the Gulf to do so. Dwindling oil reserves have led to a shift to petroleum refining and processing. Another major economic activity is the production and processing of aluminum. In fact, Bahrain has one of the oldest and most developed aluminum industries in the Gulf Cooperation Council, or GCC. In the 1960’s, the government of Bahrain established Aluminum Bahrain B.S.C. (ALBA), one of the world’s largest primary aluminum smelters, in its effort to diversity away from the oil and gas sector. Now, aluminum constitutes 28% of Bahrain’s total exports, and aluminum-related production accounts for 12% of Bahrain’s GDP. Construction is another avenue for employment in Bahrain.
